How to Start a Daily Journaling Habit (Even If You've Failed Before)
I have a drawer of half-used notebooks. Each one starts with a neat first page and dies around day four, usually after a week where I was tired and told myself I’d “get back to it.”
The advice online didn’t help much. Write for half an hour. Buy a nicer pen. Be consistent. Cool. None of that survives a normal Tuesday.
What did help was making the whole thing smaller and less precious.
Two minutes is fine
If your bar is “a proper journaling session,” you’ll skip it the first night you’re knackered. Lower the bar until skipping feels sillier than doing it. One paragraph. Three bullets. Literally “long day, brain soup” and stop.
Do it after something you already do
I write after coffee, while the kettle’s still warm. You might prefer after brushing your teeth or before email. Pick one slot and leave it alone for a few weeks. Don’t reinvent the schedule every Monday.
Have a question ready
Blank pages make me stall. A question doesn’t.
Stuff like: what’s taking up space in my head? What would make tomorrow slightly less awful? Or borrow from these morning / evening lists.
Ugly writing is allowed
If you’re waiting to feel insightful, you’ll wait forever. Most of my entries are messy. Some are one line. Miss yesterday? Don’t do a guilt essay. Just write today.
Don’t journal next to Instagram
Obvious, and still I forget. Put the phone face down, or use paper, or use an app that isn’t also a feed. Distraction is the habit killer more often than “lack of discipline.”
Skim last week on Sunday
I don’t review every night. Once a week I scroll back and notice if the same complaint showed up four times. That’s usually the useful bit.
Tonight, if you want a script
- Timer for two minutes
- Write whatever’s loudest in your head
- One line about tomorrow
- Stop when the timer ends
Then do roughly the same thing tomorrow. That’s the habit.
Daily Quill is the app we made for this: short entries, optional prompts, no feed. Android or browser.
