Evening Brain Dump: How 5 Minutes of Nightly Journaling Helps You Sleep Better
I can be dead tired and still lie there with my brain running tomorrow’s to-do list like a broken playlist. Email I should’ve answered. Thing I said weirdly. Shopping. All of it, at 11pm, when I can’t do anything useful about any of it.
Brain dump = writing that stuff down before bed so it has somewhere to live other than my head. Not a plan. Not a diary masterpiece. Just offload.
Park tomorrow’s junk
Tasks, reminders, “don’t forget.” Write them. You’re not doing them tonight. You’re telling your brain they’re recorded so it can stop refreshing.
People study this (writing tomorrow’s list before sleep). I mostly care that my own head gets quieter.
One okay thing from today
Optional if you’re in a foul mood. If you can manage it: one thing that wasn’t a disaster. Sandwich was fine. Meeting ended early. Dog did something funny. Keep it small.
The thing that won’t shut up
Write the looping conversation or the stupid mistake in a few lines. Then write “tomorrow” under it. Sounds dumb. Works more often than arguing with myself in the dark.
A word for the morning
I sometimes put one word at the bottom: slower. Less frantic. Coffee first. Not a schedule. Just a nudge so I don’t fall asleep mid-panic about 7am.
How I actually do it
- Sit up. Beds are for sleeping, not typing essays.
- Two lines is a win.
- Same time most nights (after teeth, for me)
- Phone elsewhere while I’m writing
